National Modern Languages SCITT
Want to train as a languages teacher?
Then consider our one-year course. Whether you recently graduated or are considering a career change, the National Modern Languages SCITT can prepare you for life in the classroom, as well as provide specific training in modern languages teaching. We also have many trainees from abroad who are native speakers with a good command of English.
The ONLY national teacher training course for modern languages
Your training has been developed in close collaboration with Modern Languages experts from schools and universities and includes ‘day school’ where we bring together all our Modern Languages trainees for subject specialist training. Our course leader is our current head of Modern Languages who has been teaching in English schools for 25 years, successfully mentoring trainee teachers for over 15 years. She is also a German national who trained to teach in England and understands the challenges of teaching in a new setting. You will have the opportunity to explore your own subject knowledge away from the classroom on a regular basis. There are two clear strands to the programme: academic study and classroom practice.
Hands on experience in the classroom
The training programme takes place in a collaborative and supportive network of schools where you will gain experience in two contrasting schools and a variety of educational settings. You will spend most of the year in your placement school, however, you will also spend six weeks in a second school; these arrangements are statutory. This second school will complement your first placement to ensure you have a varied experience of schools.
Our choice of placement school is based upon your experience to date, areas for development and any relevant personal circumstances. We want you to be happy in your placement school and will endeavour to take any personal requests into consideration. In addition, you will have the opportunity to visit a special school. This will help you to develop your skills so that you are prepared to teach the full ability range of students and see differentiation in action!
Train in one of our geographical hubs
The National Modern Languages SCITT is in partnership with local teaching schools and excellent schools from both the state and independent sector. Our partnership extends to many areas of the country enabling you to choose a setting that most suits you. Click here to see the range of hubs currently available.
A supportive environment
From the moment you join us you will be supported by an experienced and friendly team, from the SCITT Director and lead teachers to the admin personnel and school based mentors. In the early induction period you will be encouraged to get to know your peers and develop your own close knit family of fellow trainees across the partnership, who will act as invaluable support as the year progresses and later on as you begin your career.
You will have subject specific training with your Lead teacher and seminars with university lecturers. Our experienced and caring leaders and staff will be able to help you with all aspects of the course and support you personally if the going gets tough!
We offer a unique familiarization programme, which allows you to meet your peers and have an in-depth introduction to the English education system as well as teaching and learning prior to going into your first placement school. This means that when you start in your first placement school you will feel fully prepared.
